Best Schools in Muscat: A Parent's Complete Guide (2026)

Choosing a school in Muscat means choosing a curriculum first, then a commute. Here is how the options break down.

British Curriculum

The British School Muscat — Madinat Qaboos The long-established option, running the English National Curriculum through to A-Levels. Strong sport and arts programmes, and consistently the hardest to get into. Fees sit at the top of the market (roughly OMR 4,500–8,000/year depending on year group).

The Sultan's School — Seeb Bilingual English and Arabic, IGCSE and IB Diploma, with a large campus and a strong national reputation. Fees around OMR 3,500–6,500/year.

American & IB

American British Academy — Al Khuwair Full IB continuum from primary to Diploma. Well-resourced campus and a broad expatriate intake. Fees at the higher end, roughly OMR 5,000–9,000/year.

American International School Muscat — Al Ghubra US curriculum with AP options, small class sizes, strong university counselling. Fees around OMR 4,000–7,500/year.

Indian Curriculum

Indian School Muscat — Darsait CBSE, very large intake, and the anchor of the Indian School network across the governorate (Al Ghubra, Al Seeb, Wadi Kabir, Al Maabela and others). Fees are a fraction of the international schools — typically OMR 400–900/year — which is why demand consistently exceeds seats.

What to Check Before You Commit

  1. Commute at the actual hour — the Sultan Qaboos Street run at 07:00 is not the same road as at 11:00
  2. Waiting lists — apply a full year ahead for the popular British and IB schools
  3. The real fee — registration, transport, uniform, trips and exam entry are usually quoted separately
  4. Ministry of Education registration — confirm the school is licensed and the curriculum accredited
  5. Visit while school is in session — an empty campus tells you nothing

Timeline

Most schools open admissions in January for the September intake. Assessments run February–April. Leaving it until the summer usually means taking whatever is left.
